Self-Directed Costume Project
Nv Ba, 2024

Costume Design, Construction &  Film Direction: Estrella  Guo
Modeling and Cheographing: Sylvia Yang

Nv Ba reimagines the drought goddess from Shan Hai Jing through a hybrid visual language that merges shamanic ritual, Nuo symbolism, and avant-garde structural design. Rather than reconstructing historical costume, the project translates the spirit of ancient ritual into a contemporary material and bodily form.

EVA foam and leather exoskeleton forms the core structure, layered with printed ritual motifs and animalistic textures to create a body suspended between human, beast, and spirit.

The accompanying short film acts as a character study, using movement, breath, and light to test the costume’s presence in motion and reveal Nv Ba’s desolate yet divine aura. Through this performative exploration, myth is re-embodied within a contemporary visual language.
